1DROP to your hands and knees. COVER your head and neck under a sturdy table or desk — or against an interior wall away from windows. HOLD ON until the shaking stops.
2In bed: stay there and cover your head with a pillow.
3Outside: move to an open area away from buildings, trees, and power lines, then drop.
4In a car: pull over somewhere clear, set the brake, and stay inside.
5When it stops: expect aftershocks. Check yourself and others for injuries.
6Smell gas or see damage? Get everyone outside.
What to grab
Put on shoes first — broken glass.
Flashlight, phone, and first aid kit.
Water and medications.
Pets, on a leash or in a carrier.
Where to go
Stay where you are while it is shaking.
Afterward: an open area away from damaged buildings, then your meeting spot.
Near the coast and the shaking was strong or long? Go to high ground right away — don't wait for a warning.
What NOT to do
Don't run outside while the ground is shaking.
Don't stand in a doorway — a table is safer.
Don't use elevators.
Don't light matches or candles — there may be a gas leak.
Don't go near damaged buildings or downed power lines.
Don't tie up phone lines — text instead of calling unless it is an emergency.
