Do this first
- 1RUN: if there is a safe way out, leave. Leave your belongings behind. Help others if you can.
- 2HIDE: if you can't run, get out of sight. Lock or barricade the door, turn off the lights, and silence your phone (including vibrate).
- 3Stay quiet, behind solid objects, away from windows and doors.
- 4Call 911 when it is safe. Say where you are, how many attackers, what they look like, and what weapons.
- 5FIGHT: only as a last resort if your life is in danger. Act together, commit fully, and use anything as a weapon.
What to grab
- Only your phone, and only if it does not slow you down.
- Nothing else.
Where to go
- Away from the threat and out of the building, if there is a safe path.
- Otherwise a room with a lockable door and solid walls, out of sight.
- When police arrive: keep your hands visible and empty, follow their orders, and move the way they point.
What NOT to do
- Don't stop for belongings.
- Don't gather in the open or in hallways.
- Don't make noise or leave your hiding place until police tell you it is clear.
- Don't open the door for anyone you cannot verify.
- Don't run toward police, wave your arms, or yell.
- Don't hold anything that could look like a weapon when police arrive.
